Paraformaldehyde (also written as Para Formaldehyde) is the smallest polyoxymethylene, the polymerization production of formaldehyde with a typical degree of polymerization of 8-100 units. It has commonly a slight odor of formaldehyde due to decomposition.

Polyoxymethylenes of longer chain-length (high molecular weight) are used as a thermoplastic, also known as polyoxymethylene plastic (POM, Delrin). Paraformaldehyde (PFA) is not a fixative and a typical formaldehyde fixing procedure would involve using 4 per cent formaldehyde solution in phosphate buffered saline (PBS) on ice for 10 minutes.
